Christchurch Infant School

Outdoor Learning

At Christchurch Infant School we recognise that children are happier and healthier when they have regular opportunities to learn and play outdoors. We believe that regular time spent in nature enhances learning, supports mental and physical health and nurtures the emotional development and wellbeing for all our children. We understand education is more than the acquisition of knowledge, and we aim to create opportunities which spark curiosity, imagination and personal growth from our youngest, to our oldest learners through utilising our outdoor spaces. We aim to foster a deeper connection with nature and equip our children with the knowledge and skills required to care for their immediate environments, enabling them to become responsible members of the community who recognise the importance of protecting the world which surrounds them.

We aim to enrich our curriculum by extending the children’s learning experiences beyond the classroom. As a school community we see learning outside of the classroom as an opportunity to foster a deeper connection with our environment and as a vehicle to develop our children’s capacity to learn. We aim to develop our outdoor spaces to make curriculum linked outdoor learning a regular part of our children’s learning journey through our school. As we continue to evolve our outdoor learning space and provision, we remain committed to nurturing a generation of young people who recognise the value of protecting our environment and developing a love of being outdoors.
