Music
At Christchurch Infant School, our intent is to deliver a high-quality music curriculum in EYFS and Key Stage 1 that inspires, engages, and challenges pupils. We recognise music as a powerful tool for developing pupils’ cultural capital, emotional wellbeing, and cognitive growth as well as a universal language that embodies creativity, expression, and cultural richness.
Through carefully sequenced and inclusive music lessons and experiences, our provision ensures that pupils:
Use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs from the Charanga scheme, in which we look at Pitch, Pulse and Rhythm. We also include singing sessions with Soundstorm Music Company and watching live performances of professional musicians.
Play tuned and untuned instruments musically, developing coordination, listening skills, and musical awareness.
Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music from different traditions and composers through Active Listening.
Pupils will be given the opportunity to perform and review their creative compositions and sounds and explore pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure throughout well-structured music lessons.
Aligned with the Ofsted framework, our music curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, ensuring all pupils, including those with SEND can access enriching musical experiences that build cultural capital. Our curriculum is well-sequenced and progressive, supporting pupils’ development of musical vocabulary, skills, and knowledge from EYFS through KS1 and is supportive of personal development, fostering self-confidence, resilience, and collaboration through performance and creative expression.
By embedding music into the heart of Christchurch Infant School, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of music, encourage passion and aspirations, enhance cognitive and emotional development, and prepare pupils for future success both within and beyond the classroom.
