Reading
At Christchurch Infants School, we believe that’s from the early stages of development, all children should experience success in Reading and build up confidence to ask questions, discuss definitions of new vocabulary and explore books in order to develop a love of reading.
“Each great book develops the imagination and equips the reader with language. Around 75% of our vocabulary comes from our reading.” Pie Corbett
Reading is a vital skill that is used in everyday life. All children should enjoy discovering new vocabulary and developing their phonics and word reading skills, as well as their ability to comprehend and discuss a text. Through their use of effective questioning and discussion, teachers will also use misconceptions as opportunities to improve and deepen children’s understanding of what they have read. Opportunities are taken to work collaboratively in class, as well as with Christchurch Junior School through exciting events such as World Book Day and Reading Partnerships between schools and key stages 1 & 2.
“Recreational reading is declining, both nationally and internationally. Research by the National Literacy Trust in 2022 showed that reading for enjoyment is at it’s lowest level since 2005. It is therefore essential that schools plan systematically to nurture pupils desire to read. It cannot be left to chance.”
“..as far back as 1970s, evidence was emerging suggesting that ‘reading for pleasure had a powerful influence on children’s cognitive development, especially in terms of their vocabulary.” ‘The Reading Framework July 2023’
